Please help a person from the North! mom ;D Waco & Texarkana are pretty far from each other but I guess you know that. Several of the Waco Eagles members are racing in Corsicana TX Sunday at Extreme MX. They are having open practice afterward. Let me know if that's any help and I'll get you directions.

thanks for responding! I think my family will be in Fort Worth tonight. Heading for Lake Whitney. How far of a ride would it be from Fort Worth and about would it be appropriate for a 50cc (cobra CM) rider to be there at open practice? Thanks, concerned mom

Just wanted to say thank you for your info Blazingmx. My husband and son got to extreme mx in time to race and practice. It was the first time since late October that my son rode out doors; so, seat time was much needed. My son was excited to meet the one rider in his class and had was happy to meet a new friend from Texas. Good luck everyone in the coming racing season. Sincerely a mom from Michigan!!

Mom from Michigan I noticed your son on the Cobra. Too bad the Waco Track was not having a race, we have quite a few 50s race in Waco and you would have gotten some really good competition. I really don't know why the Corsicana track does not have more 50s. My only guess is that it is not really a beginners track. I would have been really interested as to how the Corsicana track compared to the tracks up North.
Unfortunately we were busy with another broken frame on the Flea's bike #80 in the 65 class.

We were hoping for some competition for our son. He rode a few indoor races which is a totally different style...I guess our guy looked pretty rusty in the turns etc (per my husband). My husband said everyone was very nice and the track was in good shape. He was disappointed about how few kids were there but thought maybe it was just the track or the weekend. I'll ask my better half the pro's and cons on that track to the ones in Mi. They made it to Hillsboro last night and need to register etc today. He did say that it was just different than in Michigan (I'll ask what that actually means!) Most tracks in Michigan have a small track (for 4-6ss, 7-8 ss, 4-8 trail, 65 beginner etc) and 50 JR and 50 SR on up ride a big track. From what I understand, Extreme was smaller than our big tracks. My husband said the 65 class was pretty small but there was one pretty fast kid...
Bummer about the frame!!!! Did you get to finish the race or was it in the first moto? I am hoping that we have good luck with parts etc. I'm going crazy not being there. It's the first race I've missed but we have a 5 year old that races indoor and I need to take him this weekend! I'll post with the track differences soon. mom in Mi

That "pretty fast kid" would be Daddyflea's son - Lee the Flea. Luckily he had a backup bike that he could use after the frame broke on his other one. My twins were the 2nd and 3rd place riders in the 65 class.
Good luck to your son at Whitney - glad they made it to Hillsboro last night. Your husband asked us for directions to get to Hwy 22 from the track -- but we weren't sure how to find that! We came in from Waco - so we only knew how to get to and from Hwy 31!
Welcome to the Waco Eagles Forum!

Thanks Brenda!! We are hoping that our guy rides to his ability and has a good time. We are a little concerned with the southern kids having more outdoor seat time right now We've only done one other national...Branson. 65's are usually a huge class (20+) up here so I'm not sure how many kids ran yesterday at Extreme. Thanks to everyone who helped out my Family! Anytime a kid can place in the top 3 is awesome. Congrats to your boys. How do you handle the competition between the twins? My 5 year old will race against the 6 year old (currently in your state ) this season and as of right now the older is faster and it's hard on my 5 year old. Two other ?'s: 1. Do all tracks in TX only have one track that all size bikes run on? 2. Can you switch bikes if one bikes breaks between motos? Tracie aka:mom in MI

Very delicately! ;D When the boys were on 50's, Jared was the one who would usually win -- Logan took it in stride most of the time, but sometimes he would get frustrated - "Jared always wins!" Now that they are on 65's, Logan has really stepped up his riding level and now is consistently beating Jared. I think that took Jared by surprise, but he is okay with it. As long as he is in the hunt and not left way behind by his brother, he feels like he's put in a good fight -- he actually beat Logan out there at Corsicana, so it's a little back and forth which is a good thing. We all try to focus on the positives for both -- we always have a large cheering section with Grandma, Uncle, cousins, Mom & Dad, Waco Eagles friends - so there are plenty there to give both of them high-5's when they come off. We focus on how great they made different turns, jumps etc. We also make sure each of them tells the other "good race" and we make sure they don't "rub it in" that they beat their brother. We actually have had a couple of occasions where one got a trophy and the other didn't and the one that did wanted to give his trophy to his brother! So just make sure they can empathize with their brother! We usually ride locally, but as far as I know the kids usually ride on the same track as the big bikes -- maybe with a few exceptions. For example, Freestone County Raceway has a huge stepup jump that the PW's and mini adventures can't really get up, so they have a path around it that the 50's take during the race. The bike switching question -- this wasn't an AMA race, so yes you can switch. AMA - I don't believe you can, but maybe someone out there knows a better answer on this one. Your son rode great yesterday -- we noticed his Cobra zipping around out there. I agree with Danny - I wish there had been a race at Waco this weekend -- he would have had more competition. We have several fast Cobras & Ktms that ride out at our track. We usually have 10 to 12 riders in our 65 class at Waco, so this class of 6 riders at Corsicana was small. I'll bet when they get to Whitney though the 50 and 65 classes will be huge! The AMA races we've gone to around Whitney and North Texas have had huge representation in those classes - 30 riders in the 65 age 7-9 in one of the races we went to! Good luck -- I know you are going crazy not being able to be there to watch - I know I would be! Brenda

Thanks for the info about the competition between the boys! Tait (6yrs) does always want to give his trophy to his younger brother. We try very hard to look at small accomplishments for both (good starts, turns, form etc) but I usually end up starting the 5 year old on his ktm mini ad. and my husband takes the Cobra (a little more touchy). Now that Tait can start his bike etc Mike can give more attention to our younger one. OUr 5 year old has better form etc than his older brother at age 5....so, maybe towards the end of this season there will be some closer races. We do get the "Tait always wins..." sometimes! There are 27 kids in Taits class so far at Whitney and those are only the preregistered! Are there any from your club there?
We only ride AMA in Michigan and we would not be allowed to switch bikes. My thoughts are to let the kids ride. I wouldn't want my kids to get a higher placement b/c another riders bike wouldn't start but had another one that they couldn't ride! tracie

We usually have a few but not too many.. My son last year rode (50 SR class) some tracks in the Ft Worth area and there is alot more competition! But so far all the people around here are pretty nice..

Switching Bikes in most places is not legal. The reason is that for instance in the 50s you could switch a stock bike for a modified or a 65 for an 85. Of course that would be crazy and just get your kid hurt but some parents would do it.
After you get out of the 50s you will find that there are no more stock classes. In 65s the only stock races are actually Lorettas.
At Waco Eagles I am willing to bet we could have borrowed a bike as we have done in the past to finish. Unfortunately had we been disqualified for changing bikes we would not have cared much anyway as long as the Flea gets to ride he don't care if he gets another trophy or not. That is what keeps us running local races. The Flea actually likes running his slower bike. Neither is stock but both are 65.
In this area we are not even very high on AMA. During a race that was AMA the Flea was taken off the track for not wearing a long sleeve shirt. It was 100 degrees and he was the only rider with a full assortment of safety gear. Chest protector Elbow guards even a Neck brace, but he did not have on longsleeves. The Flea even wears a Mouth piece and I highly recommend them. Another thing that hurts the Flea is his 12/30/96 birthday. He always runs against kids that are a year older.
We do not have a lot of Eagles Members that race Whitney simply because Whitney has become too expensive and restrictive. The Flea has been racing for 6 years now and never has run Whitney.
Matt Gerik is our premier 65 rider right now and doing quite nicely against all the National hotshots. I would really like to get a few of them on our track and see just how good they are. Most of the Nationals riders arrive a week early and practice the track where our locals rarely get the same chance.
One thing that really gets me is that none are getting a pay check so as long as they are having fun who cares.
By the way I thought about getting Lee to give the open class at least a half lap but then I thought he might run to hard and get hurt.
Did anyone notice Jeff stopping him on the second lap to ask him if he had enough gas to finish?

Daddyflea, You've made some very good points about alot of things. I can't believe that someone removed your son for a short sleeve shirt. After getting to Lake Whitney my husband found out that people did arrive a week early and have practiced tons!! I don't know how they do it with school, work and the cost. Hopefully, the experience will be enough for our rider.
What a bummer abut your sons bday! What brand of mouth guard would you suggest for a 6 year old? We've thought about them but really haven't done the research in finding one approriate for our young riders. mom in Mi

Only one out there for motorcycles that I know of and it is the Brain Pad. These are not designed to really protect the teeth, these are designed to prevent concussions by cushioning the jaw. Brain Pad is different in that it has rows for the teeth on top and bottom as well as a hole in the center to breathe through. Works the same as others put in boiling water then bite down to form it for the teeth. The Flea also wears a Spine Brace that doubles as a Kidney belt thanks to the Urbankes. He jammed his back when he was about 7 casing a double and so far the belt has made a big difference. While we are on the subject EVS neckbraces are the best and worst ones you can buy. Buy an EVS RC1 buckle it up tight and it will put pressure on the artery in the childs neck effectively trying to put him to sleep. Don't buy RC1. Get him an EVS RC2 and he will never complain. RC2 encircles the neck completely and making it tight does not put pressure on the neck. We are also wearing some new Fox sleeve type elbow guards. These are light, hard to get on, but totally non irritating to wear. I believe Knee and elbow pads should be as madatory as a helmet. The little boy at Corsicana that I helped up in the 65 class after he spun out, did a number on his elbow. He quit after the Flea lapped him in two Motos because of the pain and his Dad tried to get him to put on the Elbow pads before he started.
