I have been to my orthopedic surgeon several times in the last couple of weeks and the news isn't very good. To put it frankly, the doc said that I will be lucky to ever get to run without pain ever again.....I think that he is out of his mind and dillusional... Supposedly, my ankle didn't just get crushed, but it kinda evaporated...sorta. They wanted to do surgery this week, but once they got more tests and painful exams done, they determined that I don't have any big enough bones left to screw or pin together. They said that my ankle shattered bad enough that it just kinda turned into dust or sand. The doc said that it was one of the worst ankle fractures that he has ever seen. "It's nice to know that I can sometimes finish at the top"
The only thing that they can do to hopefully heal it is they have me in this real funky cast that has my foot angled in a weird direction. Supposedly this will let the particles of bone settle to where they need to be, and after about 10-12 weeks, all the particles will hopefully mold together to form a bone again. And then after that I will need surgery to take out all the excess bone matter that didn't heal right.
Also, hopefully after my ankle heals, then the doc will have to work on my knee. They told me that I might have torn some Tendons or Ligaments in me knee also, but they can't do anything with that until I recover from my ankle injury. That really sucks. You figure that they can just fix both at the same time, but they said they need to fix the ankle first, then the knee.
So I will probably be away from riding for about 9 months to a year depending on how well the re-hab and physical therapy go. I plan to make it back as soon as possible, but I will still be up at the track every once in a while and definetely at every race. I gotta be there to support my family and friends. (Me and my 30 lb cast)
And one more thing.... If you see me up at the track (I'll be the one with the giant cast on my left leg), don't hesitate to stop by and say hi. I'll be glad to give anyone who is interested a class on.... "Proper Ways to Pass Another Rider in a Corner"
