Richie was seriously hurt riding at the track. Here are the details as I got them. While riding on the pee-wee track (full size bike which is a no no) he tried to catch his riding partner on the track. Disregarding the posted 5mph pit speed limit and the 1st gear in the pit rule as stated in the WEMC rule packet, he pretty much tapped out as he blasted through the pits accross the starting gates before he noticed the telephone poles we set for staging and wash control more than a month and a half ago. At the speed he was traveling he knew there was no way to avoid hitting them so he tried to wheelie over at approx 40mph. He managed to get the front wheel over and rode it for 30 of 40 feet before the bike spit him off. His injuries are back broken in 3 places, broken knee socket and wrist broken in 2 places.
The rules are stated for everyones protection and are not for race day only. Please use good judgement so you can ride again another day. As stated time and time again, ALWAYS TAKE A PARADE LAP TO CHECK OUT THE TRACK. Much of the work is done at night so our members can enjoy uninterrupted riding during the day. Just because you ride 2 days in a row doesn't mean the track didn't change over night.
On another note. I will mention a name because this is an accident waiting to happen. Over the past several months I have repeatedly talked to Cody Kipp about cross jumping while people are on the track, riding on the track when it is closed for race prep, going the wrong way on the track while other riders are on the track and just this week, though I didn't get a chance to talk to him, racing through the pits and jumping the poles over the start gates, and then racing back up the start inthe wrong direction and jumping the poles back into the pits at high speed. If anyone has any influence over him or has a repore with his grandpa, please help us out before we have another accident like the one Richie had.
I wish Richie a speedy recovery and will surely miss riding with him. Over the years we have had some great times batteling it out on the track.

Jeff I was there when Cody was doing the jumping over the starting gates and I did talk to Grandpa about it. Cody will generally listen if you stop him and lay down the law. I did not see him cross jump.

I'm sorry to hear about that. Although I am not familiar with who you are talking about, I wish him a speedy recovery and hope everything heals well.
While on the subject of cross jumping, going the wrong direction, and what not, I thought I might bring up an issue that I feel should be addressed. During races, I see alot of people riding in and out of the track while a race is going on. Am I the only one that see this as a potential problem? I understand the parents of the little guys want and need to be out there while they are racing, but isn't it a bad idea to have people (mainly the younger ones) on other vehicles riding across the track while a race is going on? I can't even begin to count the number of times I've seen someone dart across the track from the pit area without even looking to see if anyone racing is coming. It also seems like bikes and atv's driving around inside the track would be a distraction to some of the little racers. I suggest requiring people to park their vehicle in the pit area and walk across the track or require them to be inside the track (on foot) before the race begins. After the gate drops, no one should be allowed to enter the track.

I did speak with Cody after his second attempt to do a face plant, and he was actually shaken up a bit. He knows not to do it again, and now he knows why.
I'll try to make an announcement at the next Rider's Meeting about such things. And, remind me, please, if I forget.
