We were never lost we had a GPS and knew where we were going. Problem is the River curved in several places. Just one place added 10 miles to the trip which put us long after dark trying to go down the Brazos in our Kayaks. We hit a rapids in the dark and Lee had long since exhausted himself paddling. I tied his boat to mine and walked the bank to clear the rapids. There were several sets of rapids, but they were easy during the day. We sat on a Sand Bar to rest and two Dogs came running over the Sand Bar after Lee. I shot one with my Pistol and the other ran off. The Dogs never barked and we could just see the outline in the Moon Light as they ran over the Sand Bar. Problem was it was dark and we ran out of water. I was walking trying to find enough water to float the Kayaks. My Hunting Buddy Brian called the Game Warden to go after us. The Game Warden and Brian advised us to stay put on a Sand Bar and not move. Of course we kept going and it was a good thing. The Game warden hit a spot where his jet boat would not go. He was over a mile from us. It was 2.75 miles to the Ramp where the river made one bend and I paddled 45 minutes after that reading and the river turned back in the correct direction and at that curve it was 3.20 miles to the Ramp. We lost over a quarter mile after paddling for all that time. I hit another shallow spot and was walking the River in the dark pulling Lee when we saw a House at Moon River Ranch in Marlin. A Deputy turned his lights on and we crossed the River and climbed out there. It took about 45 minutes for Brian and the Game Warden to get themselves out of the River and meet us. Using a GPS the trip as the Crow Flies was only 11.6 miles. We paddled over 30 miles with one loop in the River looping 10 miles away from our Ramp.
Lee was a Trooper. He never got real scared and he paddled more than I would have expected any Man to do. My only gripe was when we were in Trouble and he wanted to shoot at all the Coyotes, Coons, and Foxes. In fact he shot up all the bullets in our Rifle. After all that ordeal He still wanted to Hunt. We wrapped his cast with a plastic trash bag and zip tied it, so it stayed clean and dry. Who says Dirt Bikers aren't tough.
