Hailey had her 5 minutes of glory tonight. Every year she enjoys entering the school talent show and always sings. She has grown up in and around professional music all her life but has never sang with a band. Tonight was her debut.
I talked a few of the guys in my band, along with power-house drummer Allen Chick, and sound extraordinair Lewis Castlow, into performing and setting up production for her. Yours truly on guitar. Practice was short, loud, and very well. Hailey has exceptional pitch and rhythm and never had any hang ups in front of people. We all met at the high school about 3pm for a 6:30 curtain call. Out come the gremlins.
The sound system we brought uses what we call a line drive rack which is a computer controlled crossover and EQ. It dumped the program and blew 3 hf speakers. After uploading the new program to the drive rack, and bringing in more speakers, the sound system was ready to go. Rhythm guitar player got held up at work and misses sound check. No problem for us, we are seasoned musicians and can easily wing it. Hailey on the other hand is about to freak out from nerves. Her arms even developed a rash from worrying about everything. Channon calls and says "I'll be there in 5 minutes. Everything is coming together now, wrong! Some of the other students decide to roll a piano across the stage and crush the midi cable that interfaces my foot controller to my processor and now I can't remotely change the channels on my guitar, something I have to do in a split second several times in the song. We start the song and I am having to reach behind me and dial up the programs on my processor each time I have to change channels. As the saying says' "the show must go on". As everything gets rolling, Hailey's nerves simmer and she belts out a flawless performance!
Almost 3 hours later the judges announce the results. Hailey didn't get an award but in my book she is a definite winner. She sang her heart out and never hit a sour note. She performed as well as any professional artist I've ever worked with despite the gremlins the night threw at her.
I'm proud of her and I'll never forget the 1st gig we played together! Hailey Rocked!!!
